How to Jailbreak iOS 6 using Redsnow [Tethered]

redsnow for iOS 6 tethered jailbreakIt’s been just over a month since the launch of the latest iOS 6 operating system for Apple devices. While there have been several tutorials and how-to guides showing you the steps needed for jailbreaking your device, I would like to tell you that our website has done extensive research on all the methods. We came to the conclusion that as of now there is no untethered jailbreak available. However, we found a completely working iOS 6 jaibreak method (tethered) and can only be performed on devices using the A4 processor. Before beginning the tutorial here are certain notes that you should keep in mind so that you are clear about what you are doing

This method of iOS 6 jailbreak is tethered and requires you to connect the device and run Redsnow every time your reboot or switch off. If you are looking for a untethered jailbreak then you need to wait.

This method is supported by iPad 2, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch (4th Generation). If you are having iPhone 5 or iPad 3 then you need to wait for A5 Chip based jailbreak.
If you ever unlocked your iPhone or iPad for any version of iOS using Gevey Sim then please do not follow this method. It will not work. You need to follow all the steps properly and make sure you checked and rechecked them. We are not responsible for anything that happens to your device, although the method is completely safe.

Steps for the Tethered Jailbreak

Step 1

First of all install iOS 6 on your device using the ISPW. You can follow our tutorial here.

 Step 2

Once your installation is complete download the Redsnow 0.9.13 (download links given above) and save it somewhere in your computer.

Step 3

Now connect your iOS device with your computer and put it into DFU mode. In order to activate DFU simply hold both the lock and power button for 10 seconds. When your device closes and restarts showing the Apple logo, keep holding the home button and you will enter DFU mode.

Step 4

Go to the destination where you downloaded Redsnow 0.9.13 Dev. You will see a Folder with a zipping icon. Right Click and select Run as Administrator.

Step 5

Once Redsnow is running on the main area you will get two options: Jailbreak and Extras. First Select Extras. At the bottom you will find another option called Select IPSW. Click on it and select the IPSW package for your iOS 6 that you used for the upgrade. Note: Download Links given above.

 Step 6

Now that your IPSW is confirmed, go back to the main page of Redsnow and select Jailbreak. After seeing a message that reads “preparing jailbreak data” you will see a page with lots of options. From that page select the option that reads “Install SSH Cydia is not available on iOS 6 yet”. Please make sure you select the option with this exact phrase and then click on next to continue. The jailbreak process will happen automatically and you will be greeted with a message confirming that the process is complete. Your device might experience some blakc and white random code generation which is perfectly normal.

Step 7

After the jailbreak is complete make sure that your iOS device is in DFU mode. In Step 3 I showed you how to do that. After your DFU mode is activated go to the Redsnow software again. Select Back and then select Just Boot.

Step 8

Now connect to your device to your preferred wi-fi connection. After the connection is complete open the terminal in your Mac. If you are using Windows then please go ahead and download Putty for Windows (links given above). Putty is a free SSH client for windows PC.

Step 9

Go to your iOS 6 Settings then Wifi and select your connection (tap the blue arrow for your connection name). You will see the IP address of your device displayed under a box saying IP. Please note down this IP address. You will need it for the SSH configuration.

Step 10

Open your Terminal in Mac or Putty if you are using Windows. Then type ssh root@(your ip without the brackets). So if your IP for example is then you need to type ssh root@

Step 10

When it connects to your iOS device it will ask for the password. Enter Password: alpine . Now the connection is complete.

Step 11

Once you device is successfully connected copy paste the code given below. It will take a while and you will see Cydia getting installed on your iOS device. Your device will also reboot once.

wget -q -O /tmp/ && chmod 755 /tmp/ && /tmp/

Step 12

Finally go back to the Redsnow client and click on Just Boot. Please remember that you need to do this every time your device boots as it is still a tethered jailbreak.

Congratulations. If you followed all of the above steps then you should have jailbreked your iOS 6 device. If you are getting stuck in any step then please comment your problems below. I will get back to each one of you.

Under a different subject you mentioned that this will work for ipad 1, then here it says it’s only compatible with 2 and newer. What’s the story? Thanks!

  2. seconding the question about Ipad 1. Does this work for Ipad 1? Will it let me run IOS6 apps?

You cannot install iOS 6 on iPad 1. However go to the Cydia store where you can download all the iOS 6 apps like Maps, Reminders, etc.
